Vast Data will triple engineering investment and promises "very ambitious products" as the company orients towards a future in which machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) will dominate IT and investment around it. That's according to chief marketing officer Jeff Denworth, who spoke to Computer Weekly this week. He set out a vision of Vast as a rapidly rising star with a product that fits a future of very large volumes of data – generated from machine and human activity – from which organisations will want to quickly gain insight. Vast Data sells what it calls Universal Storage, based on bulk, relatively cheap and rapidly accessible QLC flash with Optane (or near-equivalent) fast cache to smooth input/output. It is file storage, mostly suited to unstructured or semi-structured data, and Vast envisages it as large pools of datacentre storage, an alternative to the cloud. Despite the tie to specific hardware, Vast sells only software – it's based on a containerised control plane – and with customers able to monitor and control fleets of Vast deployments anywhere across the globe via Uplink Cloud Management.

"Enterprise organizations that have existed and done business one way for decades now find themselves working hard to build a business for the future. To truly compete going forward will require large-scale, multi-phase AI initiatives, and Pure has innovated with that particular set of challenges in mind, said Amy Fowler, VP of Strategy and Solutions for FlashBlade at Pure Storage. Organizations today are stuck with a siloed, traditional analytics infrastructure. AI Data Hub extends traditional analytics and provides more performance and security at a lower cost.

Companies of all shapes and sizes are chasing the holy grail of data-driven transformation, driven by the need to unlock insights to fuel new revenue opportunities, drive efficiencies, and deliver innovative products and services. In a survey of 2,300 global business and IT leaders by MIT Technology Review Insights, in association with Pure Storage, 87% of respondents said data is key to new business growth and for delivering better results for customers and clients. Eighty-six percent of those surveyed viewed data as the foundation for making important business decisions. Companies are facing a variety of challenges transforming data into meaningful business value. Sometimes the hardest part is figuring out exactly where to start.

The AI and ML deployments are well underway, but for CXOs the biggest issue will be managing these initiatives, and figuring out where the data science team fits in and what algorithms to buy versus build. Pure Storage launched a bevy of artificial intelligence tools, including the AI Data Hub, which are designed to meld storage and AI workflows from design to deployment. The storage company said it co-developed the AI Data Hub with Nvidia to break down the data silos that hamper analytics and model development. Storage vendors have been increasingly focused on AI workloads and managing data workflows instead of just storing it. Pure has been using its AI-Ready Infrastructure (AIRI) and expertise in solid-state storage via its Flashblade infrastructure to grab next-gen workloads.
